DESCRIPTION
When tasked with supporting, improving, and celebrating the protein value chain in Manitoba, ProteinMB faced a significant challenge: the supply chain's lack of visibility. This included unknown wastes, non-standardized measurement, monitoring, and verification practices, untold best practice stories, and untapped opportunities that were not examined holistically.
To tackle this issue, ProteinMB has innovatively adapted the Lean Value Stream Mapping tool. Traditionally, Value Stream Mapping is a process improvement tool that analyzes each step to determine if it aligns with what the customer is willing to pay for. However, ProteinMB's adaptation broadens the definition of the customer to encompass sustainability—balancing the needs of people, the environment, and profitability.
Each step in the process is now analyzed for its impact on various sustainability metrics such as GHG/Carbon emissions, biodiversity, ecosystem goods and services, soil health, social well-being, animal welfare, and governance. Additionally, it considers whether by-products are produced and evaluates the sources of inputs into the protein system from Manitoba.
The initiative aims to apply this evolved tool to individual protein processes and eventually build a holistic map representing the entire ecosystem. By doing so, ProteinMB hopes to drive the industry towards its sustainability goals and enhance overall value chain visibility.
ProteinMB is the facilitation team mobilizing the industry led implementation of Manitoba;s Protein Advatage, a collaborative strategy to sustainably grow the protein industry and position Manitoba as a global leader in sustainable protein.
Our vision is Manitoba proudly leads Canada and the world as an innovative model for high-value sustainable protein that nurtures and benefits all people, local environment, and the climate.
Our mission is through strengthened collaboration and accelerated innovation, Manitoba realizes its collective and equitable potential to produce protein that is diverse, high quality, healthy and increasingly sustainable.
